Britons on lockdown are turning to Chinese food – despite worldwide criticism of Beijing for failing to raise the alarm about coronavirus early enough.

According to Deliveroo, orders of egg fried rice and chicken chow mein have overtaken pizzas, curries and burgers.

The delivery app has also found that people are ordering at 7pm on average – half an hour earlier than before the outbreak – and the traditional Saturday night takeaway has been replaced with a Friday treat.

Marketing expert Lou Ellerton said: ‘I suspect the trend is because Chinese is seen as fundamental comfort food.’

Britons also spent an extra £300 million on alcohol last month, according to the Office of National Statistics.
