Matt Dawson and his wife Carolin Hauskeller have split after 11 years.

The A Question of Sport team captain, who is set to leave his role later this year, made the announcement on his social media accounts on Monday evening.

The TV star, 47, admitted their relationship had taken a ‘different path’, however they will endeavour to stay friends and co-parent their sons, Alex, seven, and Sami, six.

He wrote: ‘We know this will be a surprise to most but after 11 years together Carolin and I have decided our relationship needs a new direction, bringing our marriage to an end. The love for our beautiful boys grows stronger day by day as does our friendship as co-parents.

‘To our dear friends please continue to support us as positively as you can for the next stage of our lives. It’s vital that Alex and Sami understand that we will always be a united family.’ 

Matt and Carolin married in 2011 after two years of dating.

Matt, who was apart of England rugby’s 2003 World Cup winning squad, and his German-born wife revealed in 2016 that they endured ‘two weeks of hell’ as their son battled meningitis. 

Their son Sami underwent life-saving treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital. 

Speaking on ITV’s Lorraine in 2018, they revealed how they were told by medics to say goodbye to their son, as there was a real risk he would not survive.

Carolin said she coped with the prospect of losing her son by ‘zoning out’, and refusing to accept that he would not be coming home.

The couple are now work to raise awareness of meningitis symptoms among parents, after admitting they didn’t know their son’s fever coupled with cold hands and feet were warning signs.

It was revealed over the weekend that Matt, his fellow captain Phil Tufnell, and presenter Sue Barker will all be replaced on the sports show in a shake up.

Former England rugby union star Matt admitted he will miss being on ‘A Question of Sport’ ‘immensely’, after it was confirmed the trio will be departing the quiz show.

He wrote: ‘Thanks for all the lovely messages. I’m not sure how to respond so I’ll have a think Thinking face Needless to say I will miss @QuestionofSport immensely….(sic)’

Matt’s fellow team captain, former England cricketer Phil, said he will miss the show ‘hugely’.

Presenter Sue said: ‘I love the show so much they would have to remove me, it would have been tough for me to walk away, I’ve absolutely loved my 24 years fronting ‘A Question Of Sport’, it’s been my dream job.

‘But I understand the BBC want to take the show in a new direction and I’m sad to say goodbye.’
