- An anonymous reader asked for advice on improving their appearance on Zoom
- Inge van Lotringen said a bath can help to achieve a meditative, relaxed state
- Meditation studio Gong has daily 30 or 45-minute live-streamed sound baths
Q: I feel at the end of my tether. I’m working and home schooling, and I’m so tired. I’m constantly on Zoom for work, and hate looking at myself in the video — I look so haggard and come away feeling low. Can you recommend any treatments I can do at home, to make me look and feel better?
A: You’re not alone in feeling bad about seeing yourself on screen — no one likes looking at themselves the whole time — especially as we can’t get to the clinic for any treatments at the moment.

But it sounds like the main problem is that you’re feeling so low and exhausted by everything. One thing that will help is a sound bath. The idea is to put you in a meditative, relaxed state by engaging your senses using soundwaves.
During the treatment, you lie on your back in the Savansana yoga position, while the practitioner plays healing instruments, from gongs, rattles and chimes to crystal singing bowls and the human voice. The aim is to let the sounds wash over you, putting you into a state of deep rest that reduces feelings of anxiety and depression.
The good news is that you don’t need to wait until you can check into a spa. The meditation studio Gong has a packed timetable of daily 30 or 45-minute live-streamed sound baths at £8 a session, or £40 for one month unlimited (aboutgong.com). In under an hour, this will give new meaning to ‘coming to your senses’.
