  • The ceremony usually takes place in January and sees the great and good of British TV coming together to honour those voted by the viewing public
  • The NTAs is just the latest awards show to be delayed by the COVID-19 crisis, with US staples such as the Academy Awards and Grammys also pushed back

The 2021 National Television Awards have been postponed until September 8.

Bosses reportedly agreed the star-studded ceremony, which usually takes place in January but had been previously been pushed back to April, couldn’t go ahead during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The NTAs is one of the glitziest events in the celebrity calendar with the great and good of British TV coming together to honour those voted by the viewing public.

According to The Sun, organisers are planning to pull out all the stops to ensure this year’s NTAs are the biggest yet.

Executive producer Kim Turberville said: ‘The awards will return to The O2 London in September to mark the UK’s best, boldest and most beloved TV shows with a surprise-packed event.

‘And we look forward to seeing you on the night for a celebration like no other.’

Source added that organisers have no plans to make this year’s awards a virtual event and are planning the ceremony for later in the year when they hope COVID-19 restrictions are relaxed.

An insider said: ‘When the organisers had to make a decision about whether or not the NTAs could go ahead, they knew immediately they didn’t want to do anything remote.’

The NTAs is just the latest awards show to be delayed by the COVID-19 crisis, with US staples such as the Academy Awards and Grammys also pushed back to later this year.

Some awards shows, such as The Emmys and Inside Soap Awards, did go ahead but were significantly scaled back with no audience or red carpet to ensure social distancing could be maintained.

Fans who have bought tickets for this year’s NTAs, which typically takes place in London’s O2 Arena, will still be able to attend on the revised date.

The ceremony sees stars from all of Britain’s top shows in attendance, and has never shied away from making headlines with unexpected gaffes, F-bombs and hilarious backstage antics.
