Hilaria Baldwin says her children ‘craved so much to have a sister’ after she miscarried her unborn daughter at the end of 2019, as she finally opens up about welcoming her sixth child – newborn baby girl Lucía just sixth months after the birth of her fifth child, son Eduardo.
The 37-year-old shocked fans on Monday when she and husband Alec, 62, announced the arrival of their baby daughter, and she has since remained very tight-lipped about the details of Lucía’s birth — including the identity of the surrogate who carried her.
However, Hilaria has now shared some information about why the family chose to welcome another newborn just six months after the yoga guru gave birth to fifth child Eduardo, revealing that her children ‘craved’ a little sister, particularly after she miscarried her unborn daughter four months into her pregnancy at the end of 2019.
In an Instagram post shared on Thursday, Hilaria posted a picture of Lucía and her older sibling Eduardo, while hinting at her youngest daughter’s date of birth and her paternity by describing the siblings as being ‘almost like twins’.
Thus far, neither Alec or Hilaria have revealed whether they used donor eggs and sperm to conceived Lucía, however the mother-of-six’s latest post on Instagram could be seen as confirmation that they are both the biological parents of the little girl, who was carried by an unnamed surrogate.
‘María Lucía Victoria and Eduardo Pau Lucas: our babies who bring light into our lives—almost like twins, we love you so much,’ she wrote in the caption.
Ta-da! Hilaria Baldwin opening up about the ‘very special angels who helped bring Lucía into the world’ via surrogate just six months after Hilaria herself gave birth to a son, Eduardo
Surprise! Hilaria, 37, and Alex, 62, had shocked fans on Monday by revealing that they’d already welcomed a sixth child nearly six months after baby Eduardo was born
Hilaria shared a post that referenced her family’s ‘tremendous grief’ over her miscarriage, the ‘blessing’ of rainbow baby Edu, and how their two youngest are ‘almost like twins’
It is not known exactly when Lucía was born or conceived, however it is likely that the surrogate got pregnant in mid-2020, after Hilaria had announced that she was pregnant with her fifth child Eduardo.
The couple already had one girl, seven-year-old Carmen, who is their eldest child, as well as three other boys, Rafael, five, Leonardo, four, and Romeo, two.
In her Instagram post, Hilaria did not offer up any more detailed information about the surrogacy, however she did pay tribute to the ‘angels’ who helped to bring their newborn baby into the world.
‘Our hearts are filled with so much gratitude,’ Hilaria wrote.
‘The Baldwinitos craved so much to have a little sister,’ she went on, using a Spanish suffix to indicate her children, or the ‘little Baldwins.’
‘Many of you may remember the loss of their sister at 4 months in the end of 2019. There isn’t a day that goes by where we don’t ache for our daughter,’ she went on.
‘When I found out our baby had died, I told our children that their sister was going to come, just not at that time. Nothing will ever replace her, but two wonderful souls have come into our lives, and we are humbled to know them.’
Hilaria had candidly documented the miscarriage — her second that year — on Instagram, even snapping a photo at her D&C at the doctor’s office.
‘Our children were brave during our time of tremendous grief — braver than us…and they held out hope. To experience and accept life’s ups and downs is challenging, but a reality that all of us have no choice but to receive and process,’ she wrote today.
‘I have learned that often our children are wiser than we are and their wisdom has guided us.
New baby: She shared her ‘gratitude’ for her new daughter, writing that her other children ‘craved’ a little sister
Sis: She wrote that the whole family continues to ‘ache’ from the miscarriage that Hilaria suffered in 2019 at four months gestation (oldest daughter Carmen with Lucía)
Hilaria wrote: ‘Our rainbow baby, Edu, is such a blessing — we are overwhelmed by how fortunate we are to have him’
Never too busy post! Even with six kids at home, Hilaria has found time to post lots of pictures
She concluded: ‘María Lucía Victoria and Eduardo Pau Lucas: our babies who bring light into our lives — almost like twins, we love you so much’
New normal: Hilaria posted a photo of baby Lucía sleeping alongside her brother Edu on Tuesday morning after joking that the couple’s bed was ‘getting rather crowded’
‘Our rainbow baby, Edu, is such a blessing — we are overwhelmed by how fortunate we are to have him. We are living each day, bonding, and grateful for all of the very special angels who helped bring Lucía into the world.’
She concluded: ‘María Lucía Victoria and Eduardo Pau Lucas: our babies who bring light into our lives — almost like twins, we love you so much.’
While Hilaria only referred to the ‘angels’ who helped bring Lucía into the world, a source has confirmed to DailyMail.com yesterday that she and Alec used a surrogate.
The identity of the surrogate is not known, and a spokesperson for the couple declined to comment on the details of Lucía’s conception and birth.
Surrogacy in the US can cost upwards of $100,000, depending on the options used by the parents and their surrogate.
If Alec and Hilaria chose to use a ‘host’ surrogate — which is when a woman carries an embryo from the mother’s egg and the father’s sperm — Hilaria will have had to undergo IVF ahead of the egg retrieval.
This could well have been done before she conceived her son Eduardo in late 2019; she and Alec could also have made the decision to freeze eggs, sperm, or fertilized embryos, which could also have been used in the surrogacy.
However, if Hilaria and Alec chose to do a ‘straight’ surrogacy, this will have meant that the surrogate’s egg was used, along with the SNL star’s sperm.
Couples who choose surrogacy also have the option to use a donor egg instead of one from their surrogate.
It is likely that Lucía was conceived in mid-2020, although her exact age has not yet been shared. Her brother Eduardo, who is six months old, was likely conceived in December 2019, one month after Hilaria suffered her second miscarriage.
Instagram followers had plenty of questions when Alec and Hilaria first revealed Lucia’s arrival, given that she came so shortly after the birth of baby Eduardo six months ago.
Hilaria, who has always heavily documented each of her pregnancies — and miscarriages — hadn’t said anything about being pregnant again, and of course, the six months between Eduardo and Lucía’s births were not enough to bring a baby to term.
But though Hilaria has been remarkably open about her pregnancies, she and Alec kept their surrogacy journey a secret, and refused to comment on it publicly for several days.
Their silence inspired furious speculation on Monday, after Hilaria posted an image of herself with all of her children.
Critics accused the couple of ‘attention-seeking’ behavior and posting ‘clickbait,’ prompting Alec to go off on a profanity-filled commenting spree.
He had strong words for a commenter who wrote ‘yikes’ beneath the photo that he shared of his wife and their six children: Carmen, seven, Rafael, five, Leonardo, four, Romeo, two, Eduardo, six months, and newborn Lucía.
Doting dad? Alec, pictured with his newborn and his eldest child Carmen, unleashed a profanity-filled rant at Instagram users who questions Lucía’s paternity on Monday night
Fury: The SNL star told one critic to ‘shut the f**k up’ after they accused the couple of posting the photo of their baby as ‘clickbait,’ though he appears to have deleted the comment
Speaking out: He also claimed that ‘America is fueled by hate’ and said anyone who questions Hilaria’s Spanish heritage is ‘not very smart’
‘I believe that people should simply say “Congratulations” or just shut the f**k up. That’s it,’ Alec wrote, before ultimately deleting the comment.
‘Who’s the mother?’ asked another commenter. ‘She wasn’t pregnant. She gave birth six months ago. If it was a surrogate just say that. If the baby was adopted just say that. If the baby was a product of an affair and you’ve decided to raise it with your wife just say that.
‘If you don’t want to say anything — why don’t you both stop constantly posting and begging for clickbait. Just raise your 100 children in private.’
In a since-deleted reply, Alec furiously wrote back: ‘You should shut the f*** up and mind your own business.’
In response to yet another user who questioned why Alec and Hilaria were facing so much criticism, he wrote that ‘America is a country fueled by hate’ and insisted that anyone who questions his wife’s Spanish heritage scandal is ‘not very smart’.
Hilaria, meanwhile, has kept her comments turned off while posting countless photos of her family.
‘We are so in love with our daughter, Lucia. Just like your brothers and sisters, you are a dream come true,’ the Boston-born yoga guru wrote on Instagram.
Hilaria also shared several images of Lucía settling into Baldwin family life, sharing one photo of Alec cradling the baby girl in his arm while helping daughter Carmen with her math homework.
‘Teaching the baby math homework and funny faces… welcome to being a Baldwin,’ she captioned the snap.
She later joked that the couple’s ‘bed is getting rather crowded’ and posted another photo of baby Lucía sleeping soundly on the mattress alongside her brother Edu, while another of her siblings is seen snoozing on the floor.
‘Watching these three,’ Hilaria wrote alongside the picture, before adding three hearts.
Family life: On Tuesday evening, Hilaria shared a photo of herself pumping breast milk while Alec did the dishes, before posting another snap of Lucia and Eduardo sleeping together
Family: Lucía, which means ‘light’ in Spanish, has five older siblings, all of whom have Spanish-inspired names: Eduardo, Romeo, Leonardo, Rafael, and Carmen
Hilaria has only made a return to regularly posting on social media in recent weeks.
The influencer, whose given name is Hillary Hayward-Thomas, had come under fire for faking her Spanish heritage, including lying about where she was born and putting on a made-up accent for years.
Returning to Instagram, she has kept the comments turned off on her posts, but finally said ‘sorry’ for the saga on February 5, six weeks after a Twitter thread about her faux European background went viral.
Hilaria stopped short of confessing she had misled people about her Spanish roots, and instead doubled down on her previous claims that she was raised ‘with two cultures, American and Spanish’ and that she feels ‘a true sense of belonging to both.’
‘I’ve spent the last month listening, reflecting, and asking myself how I can learn and grow,’ she wrote.
‘My parents raised my brother and me with two cultures, American and Spanish, and I feel a true sense of belonging to both. The way I’ve spoken about myself and my deep connection to two cultures could have been better explained — I should have been more clear and I’m sorry.
Quiet: In the past, Hilaria (pictured while pregnant with Edu) has been open about sharing her motherhood journey on Instagram, posting images from throughout all her pregnancies
Candid: Hilaria even documented her two miscarriages on social media, revealing in April 2019 that she ‘was most likely’ losing her unborn child while sharing an image of herself in lingerie
Heartbreak: In November that same year, Hilaria suffered her second loss, and once again shared the devastating news on Instagram
‘I’m proud of the way I was raised, and we’re raising our children to share the same love and respect for both.
‘Being vulnerable and pushing ourselves to learn and grow is what we’ve built our community on, and I hope to get back to the supportive and kind environment we’ve built together,’ she said.
At the end of December, it emerged that Hilaria — who in the past claimed to have grown up in Majorca and spoke with a Spanish accent — actually spent her childhood in Beacon Hill, Boston, and went by Hillary.
It started with a single tweet on December 21 which read: ‘You have to admire Hilaria Baldwin’s commitment to her decade long grift where she impersonates a Spanish person’.
The woman then continued to post videos and proof of how Hilaria’s accent has changed over the years.
Several former classmates came forward to confirm that Hilaria was, in fact, raised in Weston, Massachusetts, by American parents without a hint of a foreign accent.
In the wake of the scandal, Hilaria took a break from social media and retreated to the Baldwins’ home in East Hampton, where she was staying with her children, while Alec was renting a nearby property so that he could quarantine away from his family and commute back and forth to the city for work.
Nothing to see here! Since apologizing for her Spanish heritage scandal on February 5, Hilaria has shared regular family updates on Instagram – but didn’t share any hints about a new arrival
Since apologizing for the scandal on social media, Hilaria has been sharing much more regular updates, frequently posting candid images and videos of life at home with Alec and the kids — but she has made no hints that she and Alec were planning to welcome a sixth child into their brood.
Hilaria first revealed that she had lost her unborn baby in April 2019, when she took to social media to document her miscarriage in a series of very candid photos and videos.
The first of which showed her posing in her underwear with a caption which read: ‘I want to share with you that I am most likely experiencing a miscarriage.’
Hilaria went on to document subsequent doctors’ appointments, and even shared selfies from her D&C procedure.
In November of that same year, she revealed that she’d had a second miscarriage, four months into her pregnancy, once again sharing the news on Instagram alongside an image of herself and daughter Carmen.
‘We are very sad to share that today we learned that our baby passed away at 4 months,’ she wrote. ‘We also want you to know that even though we are not ok right now, we will be. We are so lucky with our 4 healthy babies – and we will never lose sight of this.
‘I’m really devastated right now… I was not expecting this when I went to my scan today. I don’t know what else to say.’
The couple then announced that they were expecting their fifth child in April 2020, and by November, Hilaria implied that they wouldn’t be having any more children.
‘It very much feels like we’re done,’ she told People one month after giving birth to Edu, when asked if she was hoping to have more children.
However, the wellness expert admitted that she would never say never, joking that she had thought she was ‘done’ in the past — only for the couple to decide that they wanted to expand their family further.
‘Everybody’s asking me this question,’ she continued. ‘I don’t know. I’ve said in the past that I was done when I wasn’t done.
‘I think, right now, I’m so tired. And I feel, just with COVID, it’s just insanity. Right now, during times of COVID, it very much feels like we’re done.’
She added that her children have all grown accustomed to ‘new siblings coming in’ and revealed that they were already asking her ‘when the next one is going to come’.
