A pensioner has been arrested after a four-car pile-up saw a father killed and his toddler son hospitalised with serious injuries.
Police rushed to the A267 in the village of Frant, East Sussex, after the hit-and-run four-vehicle crash occurred at around 11am on Wednesday.
A 36-year-old man, from Dartford, Kent, who was driving a blue Ford Fiesta, was pronounced death at the scene, according to Sussex Police.
The man’s two-year-old son was flown to King’s College Hospital in south London with head injuries and he remains in a ‘serious’ condition.

The collision also involved a white Renault Master, a silver Toyota Estima and a silver or grey Honda car.
A 76-year-old Honda driver, from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, failed to stop at the scene and is currently in police custody.
He was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop after a road accident.
Lorry driver Ben Evans, 30, was among the first people to arrive at the scene following the accident.
He said: ‘I didn’t see the accident happen I just came round the corner and I saw the traffic and a lorry and car in front that had stopped.
‘They had already got the child out the car and there were plenty of people scurrying about.’
An off-duty doctor also helped cut free one of the drivers whose car had crashed into a hedge.
Specialist collision investigators closed off a section of the rural country road to gather evidence.

It was reopened around 8.30pm on Wednesday with a yellow collision appeal notice set up appealing for information.
Detectives are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: ‘Officers were called to a four-vehicle collision on the A267 where a 36-year-old man from Dartford, Kent, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
‘His son and the sole passenger – a two-year-old boy also from Dartford – sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to King’s College Hospital in London, where he remains in a serious condition.
‘Police have been working to trace the driver of one of the vehicles involved and on Thursday arrested a 76-year-old man from Tunbridge Wells on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving and for failing to stop after a road accident.
‘He is currently in police custody.’
He added: ‘Police are urging any witnesses, or anyone who may have captured either of the vehicles in the area on dash cam, to email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting Operation Utility.’
