A dull, lifeless complexion that isn’t  easily ‘fixed’ using creams and serums could point to poor gut health and should be taken seriously, experts say.

In fact almost all skin conditions are linked to the gut, according to The Beauty Chef, who says they are likely to flare up when things become unbalanced.

Our guts are home to trillions of microbes including fungi, bacteria and yeasts and when things become unbalanced it shows in our skin.

A dull, lifeless complexion that isn’t easily ‘fixed’ using creams and serums could point to poor gut health and should be taken seriously, experts say

Key signs something isn’t right include inflammation, unhappy hair and nails, dullness and pimples and finding your creams and serums are no longer working.

Topicals not performing

When your creams and serums stop working it is a sign the problems are more than skin-deep. You should take a look at your gut health and take note of any recent digestive issues including changes in your stools and feeling bloated and uncomfortable. Other signs include increased food sensitivity.

Feeling inflamed

If you are feeling or looking inflamed then it is a huge sign something isn’t right – in fact inflammation often has links to leaky gut syndrome and allergies.

But it isn’t always the case sometimes when we have an unhappy gut our immune systems become weaker which leads to inflammation as well.

It is always best to see a medical professional to work through these problems.

Unhappy hair and nails

Unhappy hair and nails is linked to an unhappy small intestine which leads to an inability to properly absorb nutrients from our food.

‘If you’re suffering from malabsorption issues, it means that your small intestine is having difficulty absorbing nutrients, which in turn, means your body has less available nutrient resources,’ they explained.

This results in weak nails and brittle, dull hair.

Elimination frustration

‘Your liver sends processed chemicals to your bowels to be excreted, but if your bowels aren’t moving properly then toxins are retained in your body systems including the lymphatics which sit just under the surface of your skin,’ they explained.

This can result in dullness, acne and pimples which are key concerns for many people with unhealthy skin.

Diet is important for boosting gut health, so limiting irritants such as sugar, alcohol and processed foods can help a lot.

Eating plenty of plant-based foods and healthy fats can also help – as can radiance-boosting supplements which aim at restoring the balance of bacteria in your gut.
