Former Abercrombie & Fitch manager reveals she had to banish less attractive employees to the back

Yet another former Abercrombie & Fitch employee has come forward to share horror stories from her time at the clothing company, revealing that she was one chastised for moving a less-attractive back-of-store employee to the sales floor.
Kirby Mansour (@kirbymansour) worked at an Abercrombie & Fitch store in Charlotte, North Carolina from 2011 to 2013, first as a model and then as a manager.
When she recently watched ‘White Hot: The Rise & Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch’ on Netflix, she said the discriminatory practices outlined in the documentary by other former employees rang true from her own experience, and in fact only scratched the surface of what they endured.
‘When I tell you every single thing on that documentary was not only true, some of it — they left some parts out,’ she said.
‘When I tell you, you guys would freak out if you knew the s*** that they made us do. It would be so cancel culture at this point — they would be so canceled.’

Mansour has gone on to share details from her time at the company in several videos, and specifically called out the brand’s hiring practices.
‘The craziest thing when I first started working there was the hiring process, and only hiring good-looking people,’ she said.
This is discussed at length in the documentary, and there have been similar claims about Abercrombie for years. Countless employees have detailed that those who were hired had to have the right ‘look,’ which usually meant not only attractive but white.
‘When you get brought in, if you’re good-looking enough to get hired, you’re either put in the back as impact or on the floor as model. The determining factor of that is if you get approved [by home office] or not… [which means] you are attractive enough to be in the front room,’ Mansour said.
To get approved by the home office, employees had their photos taken as part of their application — and those photos were then sent to corporate.
‘The diversity? There was none,’ Mansour continued. ‘It was all white people. I think they cared about what color hair we had — there was a blonde girl, a brunette, a redhead. But it was all white people.’

She recalled one particular incident she found ‘so messed up’ during her time as a manager.
One day, her floor employee — or ‘model’ — called out last minute for an opening shift, so the only two people working were her and a guy who worked in the back. She asked that guy to work the floor that day to cover for the missing employee.
‘My district manager came in… she was like, “Why is Greg at the front?” And I was like, “Well, what do you mean? Our model called out, so I had to have someone in the front.” And she told me, “I would rather you not open the store than have someone from the back, that’s meant to be in the back, be at the front of the store,”‘ Mansour said.
She also noted the reason that front-facing employees were called ‘models’ instead of cashiers, greeters, or salespeople.
‘They call you a model so that they can get away with being super particular about how you look and how you’re dressed,’ she said.
In fact, she said, every employee had to adhere to dress code, which included outfits from a style guide that changed every season.
Everything had to be from Abercrombie or Hollister, and the outfits had to be styled as seen in the guide — this top with these bottoms, sleeves rolled just so.
Mansour shared some of her experience with how people were treated based on their looks. She also detailed the strict dress code
‘They literally did step-by-step instructions on how to cuff your button-down. And it was not a joke. People took this so seriously,’ she said, adding that people would get in trouble if they weren’t styled just right.
‘Mike Jeffries and the whole upper management, they were so critical and particular about this kind of stuff,’ she said.
And while items in the guide carried a 50 per cent employee discount, the brand’s clothing were still quite expensive.
‘If you couldn’t afford it, like, oh well,’ she said.
Mansour questioned the legality of requiring employees to buy the company’s clothes — and in fact, A&F settled a class action suit by employees in 2003 over the matter.
The company agreed to pay $2.2 million after nearly 11,000 former employees said their uniform policy violated California labor regulations.
In addition to policing clothing, Mansour said, stores kept makeup wipes and nail polish remover on hand because girls could only wear minimal makeup — and were supposed to look like they ‘just got off the beach.’
Mansour recalled one district manager being ‘so mad’ about a female employee who got fake nails.

‘They were so focused on all the wrong things that it would just blow my mind,’ she said.
Facial hair was also banned for guys, so razors were kept on hand as well.
Mansour admitted that she is sure people ‘really do have trauma’ from working at Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister stores.
The Netflix documentary certainly seems to indicate that the company’s policies left a lasting negative impact on some of its former employees.
Several former employees who sued A&F for discrimination shared details of their experiences at the brand, which at the time was headed by former CEO Mikes Jeffries, who took over the company in 1992 and turned it into a cultural phenomenon.
Anthony Ocampo, Carla Barrientos, and Jennifer Sheahan were among a group of nine former employees of color who filed a class-action suit against Abercrombie & Fitch for discrimination in 2003.
Gonzalez v. Abercrombie & Fitch Stores alleged that Abercrombie ‘refused to hire qualified minority applicants as Brand Representatives working on the sales floor while discouraging applications from minority candidates,’ according to the LDF.
The suit was settled out of court, and the company promised to change their hiring process.

In the Netflix documentary, Ocampo claimed he was left in a ‘rage’ by a conversation he had with his local store’s manager when he tried to get rehired in his early 20s.
He said he was told he couldn’t be rehired because ‘we already have two Filipinos working at this store.’
‘At no point did I say I was Filipino so that was a guess on the part of the person that worked there,’ he said.
‘I remember I told my parents and I told close friends and they very much agreed with me that it was f***** up.’’
The former employee said this was ‘explicit’ racism, and that it left him ‘in a rage that never went away.’
Ocampo said the incident is what motivated him to join the 2003 lawsuit.
‘When I was invited to be a part of the lawsuit, I thought, “Here’s an opportunity to call Abercrombie on their b******* of trying to say that they’re an all-American brand”, and yet, the way they’re maintaining this image of all-American is to hire a bunch of white folks and fire a bunch of people of color,’ he said.
Jennifer Sheahan claimed she was also let go by Abercrombie & Fitch in Costa Mesa, California, because she is Asian.
Sheahan, who was a student at the time, explained she learned she’d lost her job by being given a card saying, ‘If you don’t have a paycheck, you’ve been let go.’

Former CEO Mike Jeffries took over Abercrombie & Fitch in 1992 and has openly said he wanted the brand to be exclusionary
She said she lost her job after a member of the corporate team from the retailer visited her store and ‘noticed a bunch of Asian people in the store.’
‘They said, “Well, you need to have more staff that looks like this” and they pointed to an Abercrombie poster, and it was a Caucasian model,’ she claimed.
Sheahan said she had had a very positive experience working for Abercrombie up until that point, and found it ‘hurtful’ to be let go because of the way she looked.
But, because she was only 21 years old at the time, the former employee did not know what she could do to get justice.
Meanwhile, Carla Barrientos, a Black woman, claimed she was taken off her store’s schedule after requesting to work on the shop floor.
It was understood within the company that the employees on the floor all had to be good looking and respect the Abercrombie & Fitch style guidelines.
One of those guidelines was that neither male nor female employees should wear dreadlocks or gold chains, and should have ‘classic’ ‘All-American’ features.
Barrientos explained she asked to be put on more day shifts, but was told she could only work night shifts and cleaning shifts.
She tried to swap shifts with a coworker, but her manager refused to facilitate her request, and she was eventually taken off the schedule altogether.
‘I remember asking him, “Do I still work here?”‘ she recalled.
‘He said, “No, you do, just keep calling us.” I knew I had been fired so I just moved on. There wasn’t a resignation or there wasn’t anyone who called me… it was over.’
