An aerial photographer has captured synchronised swimmers in perfect formations in a series of images to celebrate the sport.

Brad Walls, a fine art aerial photographer, took the snaps of the Australian-based Sydney Emeralds Synchronised Swimming team for his new work titled Water Geomaids.

He wanted to create a hybrid photography series and began drawing the geometric shapes he wanted to form on paper and create in the pool.

The team are choreographed by Katrina Ann, a former athlete who has competed at the Commonwealth Games and in multiple World Championships.

She took no convincing to work with Brad, and said: ‘Artistic swimmers spend hours every day working to achieve perfection.

‘With Brad’s eye for detail, perspective and creativity, we were able to showcase our hard work that is often lost to the naked eye.’

Using these drawings, the duo collaborated closely together in order to bring their vision to life.

Brad added: ‘When working Katrina, our aim was to cherry-pick static positions from routines that build repetition of form and geometric sequences.’

He usually meticulously plans out all of his shots beforehand, but said that ’80 per cent is planned and 20 per cent is impromptu’ on the shoot.

‘No matter the amount of planning that goes into it, there will always be an unplanned frame that looks awesome and couldn’t possibly have been planned’, he added. ‘That is the embodiment of art.’

The award-winning photographer, also known as @Bradscanvas, wanted to work with the swimmers due to a lack of coverage of the sport.

Brad said: ‘I was surprised at the lack of imagery capturing the shapes and patterns that Synchronized Swimmers create.’

He had already captured pictures of diving, gymnastics, tennis and ballet, and added that synchronised swimming aligned perfectly with his aesthetic.

Brad, who was a finalist in the 2021 Sony World Photography Awards, plans to release a picture book to showcase all the sports he has captured from above over the past three years.
