Roberts was married to the award winning audiobook narrator Helen Lloyd, with whom he lived in Derbyshire.

He leaves behind one son, Joe, and one granddaughter, Elsie.

Today tributes have already flooded in for the actor, with former co-star Ben Peyton called him a ‘superb actor and an absolutely hilarious man’.

Ben added: ‘We were both axed from The Bill on the same day back in 2001.

‘He came to my dressing room and said: ‘They made a mistake with our names. You were supposed to be sacked twice!”

Another fellow actor, Addrian McLoughlin, added: ‘This is sad. A long time colleague and friend from Derby Playhouse.

‘He was a very strong stage actor and a funny man. He once stayed in my flat during a London run – I’d never seen it as tidy as he left it! Thanks for some great memories.’

Meanwhile Andrew Paul, who worked with Roberts, said: ‘A quite brilliant actor with a sensitive soul and a huge range.

‘He was one of those rare actors who had both great instinct and technique.

‘I always loved working with him on the rare occasions when we would share a scene. RIP Ben. My thoughts go out to your family and friends.’

Soap fans also paid tribute on Twitter, with one saying: ‘A true legend and definitely one of the biggest legends in The Bill.

‘He will be sorely missed. Thoughts go out to his friends and family.’

Another fan said: ‘RIP Ben Roberts. He was excellent in the Bill as the blunt and gruff Chief Inspector Derek Conway and his rapport/scenes with Peter Ellis who played Superintendent Brownlow was one of the highlights of the series.’
