Doja Cat, Lil Nas X and Kacey Musgraves pack the punch in purple at the VMAs

The MTV Video Music Awards is never short of outrageous moments.

And celebs took note as they showed off their wildest styles while gracing the red carpet of the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on Sunday night.

Lil Nas X, Kacey Musgraves and hostess Doja Cat all stunned in shades of purple, proving just who was part of music royalty.

Doja Cat – who was hosting the evening’s affair – was the star of the night, strutting down the red carpet wearing a toga-inspired Vivienne Westwood look with a black bustier and drapey plum fabric.

Amping up the sex appeal, she added stacked red platform heels and latex thigh-high stockings for a raunchy touch.

The Say So hitmaker added some prehistoric panache via a gleaming stone necklace and matching earrings. 

Continuing the wild theme, she had her hair styled in voluminous black and scarlet curls and stuck her tongue out for the camera while flashing some iridescent eyeshadow.

Elsewhere was Kacey Musgraves, who put a groovy twist on Southern Belle style wearing a fabulous feathered hat with a silk Valentino couture party dress and red leather opera gloves. Rounding out the look, she slipped into a pair of Cinderella-esque clear heels. 

Montero (Call Me By Your Name) singer Lil Nas was electric as he arrived wearing a gorgeous lavender Versace suit with an elegant and plenty of inspiration from Prince.

Oozing confidence, he let one side of the bedazzled jacket fall off his shoulder to reveal his toned chest below.

Fabric gathered on one hip flowed off the the side into a fabulous train, which swept behind the star several feet.

Matching the rhinestones on his ensemble, Lil Nas added butterfly earrings and matching rings, complemented by a white manicure. Patent leather boots tied things together, along with bold grooming.

Evoking 80s opulence, the Old Town Road singer had his hair styled into a curly, dark mullet and rocked a thin moustache.

Megan Fox left little to the imagination while donning a sheer-as-can-be Mugler dress with only a glittering G-string thong underneath. 

Clearly enamored with the Jennifer’s Body actress, her boyfriend Machine Gun Kelly put his hand on her derriere as he gazed at the camera clad in a glittering ruby suit.

They weren’t the only A-list lovers there, as pals Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian also attended. 

It was clear the reality star had been embracing her love’s edgier style, seen clad in a sexy leather Olivier Theyskens dress while he donned a spike-heavy suit without a shirt.

Straight from her role as Cinderella, Camila Cabello oozed princess-like poise in a stunning silk ballgown by Alexis Mabille.

A heart-shaped, hot pink bodice teamed with an oversized bow and long skirt for the ultimate dose of romance.

She went for pure fantasy with her beauty look, adding pink rhinestones to a rose-gold eyeshadow that played off her blushing cheeks. 

Boyfriend Shawn Mendes walked separately, embracing a retro silhouette wearing a baggy cream suit over a white tank top.

Camila’s former Fifth Harmony bandmate Normani was also ready to wow, offering up oodles of skin in a bold white jacket, micro-miniskirt and nothing more. 

Olivia Rodrigo was breathtaking in a silk and chiffon Versace number that blended gauzy purple fabric and a deep sunset orange shell.

She let her long, dark tresses flow down in waves while making a statement with a rich plum-hued lip that matched her butterfly earrings.

On the red carpet, Olivia posed with the one-and-only Paris Hilton, who had her hair up in a bouncy Pricilla Presley-approved ponytail while donning a mirror-adorned silver dress by The Blonds.

They also ran into Kim Petras, who wore a BDSM-inspired mask with a Richard Quinn dress that looked plucked from the 17th century. 

Jennifer Lopez skipped the red carpet but was seen arriving in a flashy David Koma skirt and long-sleeve top which both flashed tons of flesh courtesy of crisscrossing laces.

She wore her golden blond locks down in beach waves and played up her eyes with bronze shadow.

Billie Eilish bundled up in a black sweater and chain boots while wearing her blonde locks in tousled pieces. She brought along songwriting partner/brother Finneas for the evening.

Rita Ora looked like a hero in a belly-baring Vera Wang bodysuit with a cape and long gloves while Ciara was breathtaking in a lace Tom Ford look with a revealing cut-out across the chest.

Charli XCX went wild in a barely-there lace dress with towering tresses and smoky eyeshadow.

Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz looked like quite the couple in 90s-inspired attire like chunky pendants and color-blocked athleticwear by Louis Vuitton.

Avril Lavigne proved why she was a pop-punk princess wearing a pink plaid Area-designed suit with a bedazzled bra.

She was joined by boyfriend Mod Sun, who rocked a custom suit covered in patches that said ‘No safety’ along with a Prada tie.

Injured MMA fighter Conor McGregor packed some punch in a hot pink jacket with a black tuxedo shirt and a dignified looking cane. He brought partner  Dee Devlin, who looked bold in a body-hugging graffiti-decorated dress.

Ed Sheeran traded his usually subdued style for a flashy Versace jacket while his guest wore a leather dress. 

Madison Beer looked like a bombshell rocking a slinky off-white Dolce & Gabbana dress with lacing down the side leading to a provocative thigh-high slit. 

Offering a dose of old Hollywood glamour, she had her brunette locks swept to the side in shiny waves.

Simone Biles was radiant in a soft pink dress with a single halter to the side and a slit on her left leg. 

Saweetie looked like a Greek goddess in a silver toga-like Valentino look while Dove Cameron teased her tummy in a tube top and wrap skirt. 

Anitta took the plunge in a dramatic black and white gown worn with opera gloves.

Halle Bailey was radiant in a white silk Monot while her sister Chloe went with a space-age silver look by Marni.

Billy Porter was the center of attention in silver while Shay Mitchell flaunted her figure in a tiny dress which looked like the insider of a kaleidoscope.

Meanwhile, Ashanti sizzled in a strappy black Michael Costello gown with gold accents and matching jewelry.

She was so sexy that Nick Cannon got on his knees to kiss the songstress on the hand.

Bella Poarch looked like a vampire queen as she stormed the red carpet wearing an intricately beaded bustier with matching bell bottom trousers and a Victorian-inspired cape with tiers of silk following behind her.

Debby Ryan donned a little black dress with knee-high boots and wild curly hair.

The Kid Laroi embraced rocker vibes in leather pants and a motorcycle jacket worn open to reveal his bare chest. 

Later, he was joined by girlfriend Katrina Deme, who he gave a passionate smooch.

Legendary rocker David Lee Roth was pleased to make an appearance, posing wildly while cameras flashed. 

Elsewhere songstress Tinashe turned heads donning a jagged leather bustier which put her cleavage in the spotlight.

Continuing the pirate-chic look, the Lean On Me songstress donned leather pants with laces up and down the legs. She piled on the jewelry while added a feminine touch with stiletto heels. 

Tinashe went for Jack Sparrow-like attitude with dark, smoky eyeshadow and threw caramel-streaked braids over her shoulder as she blew a kiss at the crowd.

Winnie Harlow showed off her long legs in white shorts and a matching wrap jacket by LaQuan Smith. Meanwhile, Latto glittered in a body-hugging gold gown. 

NSYNC’s Lance Bass, 98 Degree’s Nick Lachey and Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean made it clear there was no more feuding between the 2000s era boy-banders as they teamed up on the carpet.

Cyndi Lauper brought her son Wallace Thornton Lauper while Tommy Lee made it a family affair with son Brandon Thomas Lee and wife Brittany Furlan.

The D’Amelio sisters Dixie and Charli looked like sugar and spice in black and pink dresses.

This year’s VMAs are taking place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York for the first time in eight years

Justin Bieber leads the list of nominees as he has seven nominations including top honor video of the year and best direction for POPSTAR, artist of the year, best cinematography for Holy and best pop song, best editing and best collaboration for Peaches.

The pop star is followed closely by Megan Thee Stallion, Billie Eilish, BTS, Doja Cat, Drake, Giveon, Lil Nas X and first-time nominee Olivia Rodrigo. 

No doubt the musical performances during the event are highly-anticipated as Bieber will take the stage at the VMAs for the first time in six years. 

Also set to perform at this year’s show are Camila Cabello, Doja Cat, Kacey Musgraves, Lil Nas X, Machine Gun Kelly, Shawn Mendes, Olivia Rodrigo, Chloe Bailey of Chloe x Halle fame, Twenty One Pilots, The Kid LAROI, Jack Harlow, Ozuna and Tainy.

The Foo Fighters will receive the first-ever VMAs Global Icon award this year and will perform at the show for the first time since 2007.

One act that will not be seen at the event will be Lorde as she dropped from of the list of performers it was announced on the production’s official Twitter account on Friday.
