Giovanna Temellini in Milan goes a step further, making co-ordinated outfits for owners and dogs, and even branches into canine couture, which includes personal fittings for pets.

While London-based designer Maya Tiroche launched Pawshmere, offering £220 luxury cashmere jumpers for dogs after noticing a gap in the market while shopping for her own Cavapoo, Pablo.

Businesswoman Kim O’Donnell, who runs a pet accessories firm, started creating ‘twinning’ products for owners at the start of the pandemic, including washable face masks, handbags and hair scrunchies.

Mrs O’Donnell, 60, said: ‘Dogs are family, we take them everywhere from on holiday to the local pub or cafe and it’s important to owners that they look stylish.

‘It might sound silly to non-dog owners but when designers like Hobbs, Joules, Zara and Gucci are making items for dogs it goes to show how dedicated people are to having fashionable dogs.

‘It’s a fun trend and it’s lovely to see people embracing it.’

Mrs O’Donnell, from Staffordshire, has even registered an official National Twin With Your Dog Day on December 1 so people can share their matching outfits on social media.
