Gary Lineker has tested positive for Covid after feeling unwell on a flight back from Cape Town and apologised to those sitting near him.

The former England footballer and Match of the Day presenter did say he wore a mask for the whole of the journey from South Africa, but reiterated he hoped he didn’t pass it on to anybody on the plane, publishing the British Airways flight number BA42.

The TV presenter has previously been in hot water for not wearing a mask shopping in an M&S food hall in London in October 2020, despite berating the public for months to wear a face covering during the pandemic.

The positive PCR test means Lineker will not present the BBC’s coverage of the FA Cup fourth round this weekend, adding he was ‘gutted’ as they are ‘always the most fun.’

BBC One are airing non-league Kidderminster Harriers’ tie against West Ham on Saturday and Nottingham Forest’s game against Leicester City, the team Lineker supports, on Sunday.

Lineker, 61, tweeted: ‘Long time since I got between the lines. Arrived back from Cape Town early this morning. Started feeling a little unwell on the flight.

‘Sorry to those sitting near, although I wore a mask for the entirety of the journey as didn’t eat. Hope I didn’t pass it on to anyone on BA42.

‘Thanks for all the well wishes. You’re a lovely lot. Thanks too, to the brilliant scientists for the vaccines that should mean I won’t be seriously ill and clog up our brilliant NHS.’

It is not the first time Lineker has missed presenting due to coronavirus.

In late April, he was forced to miss BT Sport’s Champions League coverage of a Champions League semi-final between PSG and Man City after a member of the team involved in the production the night before tested positive.

BT’s Premier League and Europa League presenter Jake Humphrey anchored the coverage instead from the studios in Stratford, East London.

In October 2020, Lineker blamed ‘old age’ after he was snapped in his local M&S without a face covering.

The Match of the Day presenter had previously described people who don’t wear masks as ‘snowflakes,’ encouraging people to cover up as it is a ‘painless gesture’.

Lineker took to Twitter to apologise for the blunder, writing: ‘In my old age, I went into a store and forgot to put my mask on.

‘Was wondering why people were giving me daggers. Realised after a couple of minutes and hastily put it on. Felt awful and embarrassed. Apologies to those present.’

Months earlier, on April 8, in the early weeks of lockdown, he shared a picture of him queuing outside the same M&S, this time wearing a mask.

In the post, he wrote: ‘2nd time out of the house in 3 weeks to get some food supplies.

‘I’m taking no chances. Great to see people respecting the social distancing and everyone good natured.’
