Alec Baldwin was a surprise VIP visitor to the quiet Hampshire town of Alton over the weekend.

The Hollywood actor, who is worth $60m, is shooting his upcoming movie 97 minutes in the UK countryside, and residents of quaint market town Alton couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw the star checking out the local kebab shop and Co-op supermarket.

The beleaguered actor, 63, is rebuilding his reputation in unlikely surroundings, staying in a £95 a night hotel while reflecting on small-town living in a series of rambling Instagram videos.

In town: Alec Baldwin was a surprise VIP visitor to the quiet Hampshire town of Alton over the weekend, with residents bemused to see the Hollywood star filming videos on the high street

The new plane crash thriller is Alec’s first foray back into acting since a prop gun he was holding went off on the set of his now abandoned western Rust in October, killing 42-year old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

Alec kept under the radar during his few days in Alton, with one resident, Caroline Benham, even telling The Times she had seen the star looking like a ‘hobo’ in the Co-op supermarket.

Murat Mencoglu, the owner of kebab shop Murat’s Kebab House, added that he ‘couldn’t believe [his] eyes’ when he saw Alec delivering one of his video monologues to camera during a weekend stroll outside his store.

Settling in: Sharing a video from Alton high-street, he said: ‘I’m in this little town. Whenever I come to places like this whenever I travel away from the US, I look at little places like this’

‘My missus said to me, “That bloke there looks just like that actor”,’ said Mencoglu. ‘At first I didn’t take any notice, but as I saw him coming closer, I saw it really was him. Who would ever expect to see something like that in Alton?’

The Hollywood actor recorded a series of videos while walking around Alton, with one of the Insta videos featuring Murat’s shop in the background. The shopkeeper admitted that he was grateful to the actor for the ‘great publicity’.

Alec was in a wistful mood on Sunday as he shared a rambling video on social media, admitting he’d already fallen in love with the east Hampshire countryside.

‘I think, ‘What would it be like to live here? What would it be like to be a kid and this is your home?’ I grew up in a pretty big suburban town on Long Island, residential Long Island.

‘And I never thought ‘I gotta get out of here, I would go to Hollywood’ or that b******t. When I got older, I thought I would go to college and study this or that.

High spirits:  A tired looking Baldwin also confessed to finding the town’s local teenage population endearing in his video to Instagram

Farewell: Alec said goodbye to rural Hampshire on Tuesday after spending three days in the English countryside for a location shoot on behalf of his latest film 97 Minutes

‘I started to figure it out once I left home, once I saw what other people were like, different from me. When you’re around people who have options, their ambitions are contagious.

‘You really start to think about what you’d like to do, what you’d never thought of before, you didn’t think it was real.’

Lovely: The actor enjoyed a brief stay at Alton Hotel (pictured), where rooms can cost up to £95 per night

He said: ‘I see I’m walking down this little street in this little town and I see little kids and some teenage boys. This is their home. Trying to have fun, stay out of trouble, get into trouble. I just am always touched because it’s the same everywhere.

‘It just seems different because it’s foreign to me. People, kids. What they want. I always wanted to go into politics because I wanted to help people get rid of as many of their problems as possible. I know that’s a co-dependent fantasy.

‘I wanted them to live and be happy. It’s nice to get out of the US and see how things are different and the same. It never ceases to amaze me.’

He added: ‘I’m gonna do a diary while I’m here. You can see wherever I go around the world, my hair is unruly as you can imagine.

He’s off: The beleaguered actor is rebuilding his reputation in unlikely surroundings, with market town Alton playing host to Baldwin while he shoots forthcoming feature 97 Minutes

‘Anyway, I’ve been taking my mask on and off. People try and live their lives and be happy. It’s the same everywhere.’

Alec said goodbye to the rural Hampshire on Tuesday after spending three days in the English countryside.

After landing at London’s Heathrow Airport on Friday, working on Saturday and ending his weekend at a local curry house with disgraced journalist Martin Bashir on Sunday, the actor appeared to be moving on as the new week got underway.

With his belongings loaded into the rear of a waiting car, Baldwin was seen leaving his temporary home at Hampshire’s Alton Hotel, where double rooms cost up to £95 per night.

Baldwin’s UK trip got off to an inauspicious start, with the actor admitting his vehicle had been stolen in a rambling video shared to Instagram on Saturday – little more than a day after arriving.

He told followers: ‘I’m gonna go ahead and record this because I think it’s funny…

‘I get to the airport. I fly on a sleeper flight, and I get to the airport and I get through the immigration. I get my bags I’m heading to the car that’s gonna drive me to where I’m going.

In his self-confessed ‘bad’ British accent, he continued: ‘And the driver says, ‘Yeah, we’re gonna go to the car park.’

Let’s go: The actor nursed a takeaway coffee as he climbed into the passenger seat of his car

‘I do my bad accent and there’s a give away as to where I am. ‘We’re gonna go to the car park. You wait right here and I’ll be back straight away.’

‘And there he goes. I don’t see him for twenty minutes, he’s gone. And I’m like, ‘Wow.’ On my itinerary, there’s a number for the car service.

‘I call and the guy and he says, ‘I’m not your driver, I’m the owner of the company and your driver, I’ve been on the phone with him the past few minutes and he tells me your car has been stolen from the car park.’

Jetting off: Baldwin arrived at London’s Heathrow airport on Friday as he prepared for work on his latest film

‘Oh s**t. What else? ‘Your driver, its gone.’ Then the guy comes walking up. ‘It’s gone.’ I’m walking around clicking my keychain, the door opener to find out where it is. I wrote down where it was. ‘Anyway, I hope you found your car.’

The following day the actor was spotted with shamed reporter Martin Bashir at Mifta’s Indian restaurant in Alton.

Bashir, who lives half an hour away in a £1.7million mansion, then gave Baldwin a lift to his hotel.

Baldwin is currently under investigation after shooting and killing crew member Halyna Hutchins on the set of his now abandoned film Rust in October.

It comes after his lawyer Aaron Dyer confirmed last month that his cell phone had been handed over to authorities in Suffolk County, New York, close to where he lives.

It is being sought by Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza and his investigators probing the death of Hutchins, 42, on the set of Baldwin’s western Rust in Bonanza City, New Mexico, on October 21 last year.

Suffolk County cops have been coordinating with their colleagues in Santa Fe, with the device now set to be passed to them imminently.

Baldwin has not been charged with any crime, and denies wrongdoing. Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department first issued a warrant for the phone on December 16.

District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies said investigators probing the tragedy wanted to ‘obtain any materials’ from Baldwin’s phone that could uncover what led to the shooting.

Hutchins was a married mother of one. Director Joel Souza, 48, was also shot during the accident, but recovered from his injuries.
