The devastated dad of talented rugby player who died from an injury sustained while scoring a try has revealed he was watching via live stream as his son collapsed on the pitch.
Jack Jeffery, 27, was injured while playing for Evesham in their match against Berkswell and Balsall at their ground in Warwickshire on Saturday.
No official word has been given on the fatal injury, but a local rugby league report says the young fly half suffered a ‘ruptured spleen’ while scoring a try.
He was taken to University Hospital Coventry but later died from his injuries.
Jack’s dad Glenn Jeffery told The Sun: ‘When he failed to get up it was clear there was some sort of problem but the other players didn’t seem to be worried, so I wasn’t.
‘They thought it was a head injury and he would come around… he was in and out of consciousness but at some point his heart stopped for 30 minutes.
‘He lost a huge amount of blood and despite [doctors’] best efforts, they could not save him and he died in theatre.’
In cases of accidental or sudden deaths, where the cause of death is not known, a coroner holds an inquest, but it has not yet been confirmed if one will take place.
Jack’s family have already paid tribute to the fallen rugby star, saying he ‘enriched the lives of everyone who was lucky to know and have met him’.
His sister Daisy wrote on Facebook: ‘My beautiful baby brother. I can’t even believe I’m having to write these words.
‘It was just a simple game of rugby, like any other Saturday doing what you loved most.
‘You scored an amazing try but just one accidental tackle and you never got back up. I’m so sorry they couldn’t save you.
‘And I’m so sorry I had to kiss you goodnight in that hospital bed.’

She added: ‘You were just 27 and had your whole life ahead of you.
‘You’ve left behind a family who worshipped you, and Mum and Dads, Charlie’s and my life will forever be empty without you in it.
‘I can’t believe I’m never going to be able to dance with you at my wedding, watch us both navigate having families of our own, I’ll never be able to hear your laugh around the dinner table or listen to all of your funny stories.
‘Our family will never be the same with you not here. I will forever treasure our last day together as a family.
‘My kind, wonderful baby brother. My heart will forever break for you. We all miss you so much. I love you more than words. Until we meet again, goodnight.’
In a statement the Rugby Football Union said: ‘We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of Jack Jeffery. The thoughts of everyone in the game are with Evesham RFC, their players, members and the wider rugby community’
Writing about the tragic incident, Glenn said: ‘Jack passed away doing the thing that he loved the most, playing rugby.
‘Jack was the most kind hearted, generous and beautiful son who enriched the lives of everyone who was lucky to know and have met him.
‘He will be so missed by his family and friends.
‘RIP our beautiful boy.’
In a post on Sunday evening, Mr Jeffery added: ‘It is so clear to us that not only will Jack be missed by his close family but also by everyone that he knew and came into contact with.
‘He was a very special soul and we are so proud to say he was our son.
‘Bless you Jack, shine on.’
The West Midlands Ambulance service said paramedics were called to Berkswell and Balsall Common Rugby Club just after 3pm on Saturday ‘to reports a rugby player had been injured’.
A spokesman said: ‘On arrival, the ambulance crew found club officials had provided first aid at the scene.
‘The player was immediately taken to the ambulance where he was assessed and provided with treatment by the crew.
‘The crew continued to provide care as he was taken on blue lights to the major trauma centre at University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire. Medics were put on standby for his arrival.’
The Rugby Football Union (RFU) expressed its ‘heartfelt sympathies’ to Jack’s family after he died from his injury.
In a statement the RFU said: ‘We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of Jack Jeffery who tragically died yesterday.
‘The thoughts of everyone in the game are with Evesham RFC, their players, members and the wider rugby community.’
England Rugby added: ‘All of our thoughts are with the family, friends and teammates of Jack Jeffery from Evesham RFC who tragically died yesterday.’
Meanwhile, Premiership rugby stars also spoke out following Jack’s death.
London Wasps player Elliott Stooke wrote on Twitter: ‘Thoughts are with the family of Jack Jeffery and everyone at Evesham RFC this morning. An old school colleague and team mate of mine. RIP’
Jack’s sister Daisy said her brother ‘never got back up’ after scoring an ‘amazing try’ on Saturday afternoon
Leicester Tigers fly-half Freddie Burns said: ‘So sad to hear about the passing of Jack Jeffery.
‘A young rugby player who sadly lost his life whilst playing the sport we all love.
‘My thoughts are with his family, friends and everyone at Evesham RFC RIP.’
Evesham said in a statement on their official club website: ‘It is with immeasurable sadness that we have to report the tragic loss of our beloved Jack Jeffery.
‘A more committed, loyal ‘Clubman’ is hard to find. He would often return from London for training and was always at the heart of club activities.
‘He served his club, his team-mates and the county with distinction and provided much satisfaction to the club supporters in knowing exactly where the whitewash was.
‘As a club, we have been overwhelmed by the messages of support and goodwill from the rugby community. Jack was calm, respected and highly thought of. Our club and community have lost such a bright light.’
Premiership rugby stars – including London Wasps player Elliott Stooke and Leicester Tigers fly-half Freddie Burns – also spoke out following Jack’s death. Jack pictured, right, alongside his sister, parents and brother
Utopia Gym and Fitness, a weightlifting gym where Jack was as a ‘core member’, said they were devastated to hear of his death.
A spokesman added: ‘Jack was always so kind, loyal, friendly, supportive, and dedicated — we have lost an absolute gem and been left completely shell shocked.
‘We will always hold you in our heart, and our community will not forget you.
‘Utopia’s deepest sympathies go out to Jack’s family and friends.
‘We will miss you pal.’
Nigel Huddleston, the MP for Mid Worcestershire, added: ‘I am very sorry to hear about the tragic death of Jack Jeffery who was injured while playing for Evesham Rugby Club yesterday.
‘My deepest sympathies go to his family, friends and teammates.
‘The outpouring of messages online and received by the club shows how incredibly popular he was.’
