At least one student was injured after up to eight shots were fired during a shooting at a high school in Pennsylvania

Erie High School, in Erie, Pennsylvania, was placed on lockdown shortly after 9.20am on Tuesday.

Some students took cover behind their teachers’ desk while others managed to jump out of windows after a suspect opened fire in a hallway, injuring at least one student.

‘Erie Police confirm[s] that a single individual at Erie High School has been shot,’ the department tweeted on Tuesday.

‘The individual is in good condition and has been transported to the hospital. More information to follow as we receive it. Please continue to avoid the area.’

Police at the scene confirmed the student’s injuries are not life-threatening and lifted the lockdown an hour after the shots were first fired.

Authorities said they have identified the suspect, who is not currently in custody, but did not name them.

Outside the school, worried parents gathered waiting for news from police.

In-person and virtual classes have been canceled at the school for the week, as police and the district investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

‘All [we] heard was shots go off. And my teacher went to the door. He looked out the door and told everybody to jump out of the window. So I took cover behind his desk, and then I just jumped out of the window,’ a distraught student told Erie News Now.

Police advised parents to stay out of the area due to heavy traffic, and said that students are being dismissed on school buses.

‘At this point, we do not believe there is a threat so we are dismissing the students so we can investigate the crime,’ an officer said.

Erie High School, formerly called Central Tech High School, has more than 2,000 students.
