It appears fans who got their hands on the game took pictures of some of the playing cards, which contain plot information, and then posted them online.

An insider remarked that the Stranger Things franchising scheme is extremely vast, which may have contributed to the slip-up.

Producers apparently have a hand in a great deal of the marketing, but the Monopoly game may have slipped through by mistake amid the massive enterprise.

The source explained to the Hollywood Reporter: ‘Lessons have been learned and, I expect, there will be more cohesion going into season five.’

Online retailers currently appear only to be hawking versions of the Stranger Things Monopoly game that precede the season four edition.

However there are eBay postings that tout themselves as selling the Stranger Things season four Monopoly tie-in game.

A Reddit post about the spoilers made the currently unconfirmed claim that the game was ‘purchased fair and square by a consumer.’

The post floated the possibility that an employee at a brick and mortar retailer may have accidentally put it ‘on the floor ahead of schedule,’ while acknowledging that ‘I have no idea’ and that the theory was conjecture.

Stranger Things follows the residents of a small made-up Indiana town in the 1980s where bizarre supernatural events begin to take place, causing a boy to vanish.

Season three ends with a fiery battle at the town’s food court, so season four will see the characters attempting to pick up the pieces afterwards.

Part one of season four will drop on Netflix next Friday, with part two to follow on July 1 and a fifth and final season afterwards.

The cast includes Winona Ryder, as well as names like David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard who were elevated to stardom by the series.
