A fitness fanatic couple have swapped their date nights for trips to the gym in a bid to get the perfect physique.

Mike Lakomowski, 31, from Texas, and his wife, Ashley, 32, say they prefer to spend their date nights in the gym than visit a swanky restaurant with food and wine.

The pair will train up to five times per week together and look unrecognisable after following their healthy regime.

But it hasn’t been easy, both Mike and Ashley had to fight their demons, Mike was crippled with a heroin addiction while Ashley had little to no confidence just four years ago.

‘We don’t do the typical fine wine type dates,’ explained Mike. ‘Our date nights are in the gym, where we spend quality time with each other and push each other to achieve new things.

‘Our goals are bigger than that, we don’t care about going out for a nice burger and a cocktail, because we both know what we want to achieve and we understand it. That is why what we have is beautiful.

‘To us, a date is about spending quality time with someone, and that is what we do in the gym while still reaching for our goals, and then we can go home and stay on plan and eat our meal preps together while watching Netflix..’

Mikey and Ashley met seven years go, and they were in a very different place to where they are now. Mike battled addiction, while Ashley was lacking confidence and was full of self-doubt.

Before the couple met, Mike had an accident and broke his nose, and became hooked on opiates after taking medication for his nose. This spiraled into a heroin addiction.

‘I fell hard in to my addiction and ended up having to spend some time in rehab to get myself better,’ said Mike, ‘Towards the end of my addiction I decided to dedicate my life to Jesus, and that is when I met Ashley. Since then, I have never used again.’

In the beginning of the relationship, the couple would casually head to the gym twice a week, just to try and keep healthy.

Then in 2016, they decided they would ramp it up and started to take it seriously, with five intense sessions per week, eating the correct foods and taking supplements.

‘In 2018 I decided I was going to enter my first bodybuilding competition,’ said Ashley. ‘It was the largest amateur competition in Texas and I placed second.’

Since then the duo caught the buzz for competing and usually take part in two bodybuilding competitions each per year. They say that they love the discipline and pushing themselves to achieve things they didn’t know they could.

Online coach, Mike, said: ‘Prep for a competition is mentally and physically challenging, it is extremely hard work but we have each other to spur each other on.

‘It included going to the gym two to three times per day, six days a week and following an extremely rigid diet with very low calories, so it is good that we have each other for support.’

Ashley added: ‘It is great to have Mike with me as he understands and knows how to handle the situation as he has also been here before. We are each other’s biggest fans and the gym has brought us closer together.’

According to Mike, the pair are best friends and use each other as motivation to push each other to the extreme.

He said: ‘We eat together, train together and work together, and we don’t need fancy meals and wine for quality time when we can have a better time lifting weights in the gym.’
