Time Magazine 100 ’emerging leaders’ list features Marcus Rashford

Rishi Sunak, 40, and Marcus Rashford, 23, are included on Time magazine’s list of 100 young ‘emerging leaders who are shaping the future’

Rishi Sunak and Marcus Rashford have been included in Time magazine’s list of 100 young ’emerging leaders’ alongside other stars such as Dua Lipa and Florence Pugh.

Time magazine launched the 100 Next list in 2019 to shine a spotlight on 100 rising stars who are shaping the future of ‘business, entertainment, sports, politics, science, health’ and other areas.

This year, Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak, 40, and Manchester United footballer Marcus Rashford, 23, have been included on the list.

A profile was written to accompany each of the members of Time’s 100 emerging leaders, many of which have been written by alumni of the magazine’s 100 list.

Under the ‘leaders’ category, Chancellor Rishi Sunak landed a spot on the list, being described as the ‘benevolent face of the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic’ by Times reporter Billy Perrigo.

The Chancellor’s profile piece discussed the furlough scheme, describing how he approved ‘large handouts’ for people whose jobs had been affected by coronavirus.

The piece also paid respect to Sunak’s Eat Out to Help Out scheme, which the magazine described as an attempt to ‘revive the economy’ by subsidizing dining out at restaurants.  

Although his profile acknowledges that Sunak bears more responsibility than most for his calls to ease lockdown restrictions, Time’s profile for the Chancellor admits he has earned himself a ‘legion of fans’.

Sunak’s accompanying profile points to a YouGov poll showing him to be the nation’s most popular politician and even tips him to be the bookmakers’ favourite as the next Prime Minister.

Footballer Marcus Rashford was another famous Brit included on Time Magazine’s Next 100 list, and even featured on the cover. 

Seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton penned Rashford’s profile, describing how he ‘took his many talents beyond the football field’.

Rashford’s campaigning throughout 2020 for the Government to provide school meals for children in need was singled out as one of his defining qualities.

Of Rashford, Hamilton wrote: ‘By standing up for the most vulnerable in our society, and using his platform and influence to create positive change, Marcus inspired countless others to join him on this mission and cemented his status as a role model.’

Rashford, who was also described as a ‘galvanizing force behind uniting people across the U.K.’, earned his spot on Time’s list thanks to his inspiring levels of ‘determination, resilience and persistence’.

Sunak and Rashford weren’t the only Brits to feature on Time magazine’s 100 ’emerging leaders’.

Musician Dua Lipa also featured highly on the list under the ‘artists’ category, with Kylie Minogue penning a profile for the 25-year-old. 

Lipa is described by Minogue as ‘a shining star, blazing a dazzling trail through the pop cosmos’ who has ‘carved with laser-like precision her place in the cultural landscape’. 

The pop star’s work ethic was noted by Minogue, who said that Lipa had clearly listened to her father when he told her to work hard.

‘Her achievements are all the more remarkable given that she is 25 years of age,’ Minogue wrote. ‘She’s kind, cool and smart. She’s a bona fide pop behemoth. And I, like millions of others, look forward to more, and even more, from La Lipa.’

Game of Thrones actress Lena Headey produced the profile for Pugh and said she has a ‘lack of vanity that sees her fully and completely inhabit every role she takes on’.

Headey, who also described Pugh as a ‘wonderful actor, filled with generosity toward her co-stars and curiosity about the human experience’, pointed toward the 25-year-old’s upcoming role in the Marvel film Black Widow which will provide her with an even bigger audience.

Another familiar face featuring on the list under the ‘artists’ section is 32-year-old actress Ana de Armas.

Veteran actress Jamie Lee Curtis penned de Armas’ profile piece and described thinking ‘Who is this?’ at her ‘unmistakable talent’.

With nothing but praise for de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis said that her ‘gifts were evident’ and that she is confident the Cuban-born actress would ascend ‘to the greatest heights our industry offers’.

Time magazine’s list also included a spot for poet Amanda Gorman, who most recently performed at President Joe Biden’s inauguration.

Award-winning composer, lyricist and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda was the author behind Gorman’s profile piece who described how she captivatedthe Hollywood-studded Geffen Playhouse in 2018.

He described himself as a ‘fan for life’ and said she delivered a ‘masterclass’ at Biden’s inauguration.
