USING ZOOM TO ‘TOUCH UP YOUR APPEARANCE’ BEFORE A MEETING

Actor Hugh Bonneville recently appeared on the One Show looking like he had been in a ‘space time vortex from the 1980s’, with a ‘weird’ filtered face.

The airbrushed look was likely the result of a filter or series of filters within the Zoom app he used to appear remotely on the BBC One early evening show.

While the actual filter hasn’t been confirmed by Bonneville or his team, it is likely to be the ‘Touch up my appearance’ option found under the video settings menu within the app.

Touch up my appearance in the Zoom app ‘smoothes’ out your face, making you appear less detailed than would normally be the case

Ticking the box gives you a slider that can ‘smooth out’ your face, to a greater or lesser extent depending on how far you move the slider.

Bonneville may have combined this ‘smoothing out’ with other effects within the app including a ‘studio effects’ beta feature that lets you tweak your eyebrows, moustache, beard and lips digitally.

Within the general ‘video filters’ section you can also change the lighting and give your look a boost, make it noir and even put flowers in your hair.

Aside from the ‘native filters’ that come built in to Zoom, it could also be possible that Bonneville made use of a third party filter, such as those produced by Snap Camera including Snapchat filters.

By installing the Snap Camera app you can select a Snapchat filter and then use that within the Zoom app during a meeting.

This includes a new Naomi Campbell ‘beauty’ filter that produces a similar effect to the one seen on Hugh Bonneville during the One Show interview.

More details about Zoom video enhancements and filters can be found on the Zoom support website, including how to enable them for a meeting.
