Boyfriend of YouTuber Emily Hartridge – who died in an electric scooter crash – reveals how taking part in SAS: Who Dares Wins helped him ‘make peace’ with her death
SAS: Who Dares Wins have signed up grieving Jacob Hazell who tragically lost his girlfriend Emily Hartridge when she died in an electric scooter crash.
Jacob, 28, from London, revealed taking part in the gruelling Channel 4 series has helped him to ‘make peace’ with his late partner’s death after he was unfairly trolled having gifted Emily the e-scooter days before the devastating accident.
In an interview, Jacob revealed he joined the cast after feeling ‘lost in life’ and like he’d ‘given up’ after suddenly losing Emily, who passed aged 35, in 2019.

Jacob said: ‘My experience on SAS: Who Dares Wins was one of the toughest I have ever endured.
‘I am sure most people would say it would be without doubt the toughest. However after losing my girlfriend Emily in 2019, SAS: Who Dares Wins takes second spot.
‘It’s fair to say that I was not expecting it to be as challenging as it was for me. It brought up things in me that I have had buried deep down for a very long time.
‘And I am so grateful for the show and the opportunity as since leaving the course, it has helped me face up to and deal with some of those issues, rather than bury them down inside me. It helped me make peace with the whole situation.’
‘I still had some fight left in me’: Jacob revealed taking part in the gruelling Channel 4 series has helped him to ‘make peace’ with late partner Emily’s death
Emily, who worked as an influencer and had thousands of subscribers on YouTube, and Jacob, dreamed of starting a family after moving to London together in July 2019.
The couple’s hopes for the future were cruelly taken from them after Emily, while riding on her e-scooter to an appointment at an IVF clinic, collided with a lorry at a roundabout in London’s Battersea.
The accident became the first fatal collision involving an e-scooter in Britain.
Jacob said: ‘I signed up to SAS: Who Dares Wins because I felt very lost in life. After losing Emily back in 2019, I fear sometimes that I have given up in life without her.
‘I needed to prove to myself that I hadn’t. I screamed down that cliff during the abseil task, but the fact I walked off that edge proved that I still had some fight left in me.’

‘I felt tense the whole time’: While filming the Channel 4 show, Jacob admits he felt ‘really scared’ and dreaded being tasked with exhausting challenges set by Chief DS Ant Middleton
While filming the Channel 4 show, Jacob admits he felt ‘really scared’ and dreaded being tasked with exhausting challenges set by Chief DS Ant Middleton, 40, who was axed after this series was recorded.
He said: ‘It was much more difficult than I expected. I truly believe we would get some ‘time off’, or a break here and there. Silly to think that really.
‘I should have known real SAS recruits would not have been given too many tea and biscuit breaks.
‘For me the hardest and most challenging part was the constant worry of what was coming next. I felt tense the whole time, and I can comfortably say I was really scared.
‘I didn’t anticipate that fear, I knew I would have when faced with certain tasks, heights in particular, but not while I was back at the camp for example. I guess I just didn’t want to fail. If it had been easier than I thought, I would have been disappointed.’

Ant Middleton was axed from the Channel 4 show last year after allegedly telling a female contestant he was going to have sex with her.
As many as four women reportedly raised concerns over Ant’s conduct on set, causing bosses to sack him from the programme.
Former soldier Melvyn Downes has joined the line up in replacement of Ollie Ollerton, who was also given the boot last year, and is the first mixed-race officer on the show.
He will whip the recruits into shape with the support of Jason ‘Foxy’ Fox and Mark ‘Billy’ Billingham, who all star in the series that returns to Channel 4 on Sunday at 9pm.
